President William Ruto has explained the reason behind his habit of standing on car roofs during his public interactions across the country, attributing it to a sense of divine purpose.
While many assume that Ruto stands atop cars to gain a better vantage point and be more visible to the crowd, the President shared a deeper, more personal motivation. During a church service in Bungoma, Ruto revealed that his actions stem from a calling he feels as an evangelist, a role that has deeply influenced his behavior even in his political career.
“I am an evangelist. Many people sometimes wonder why I stand on raised places and sometimes on top of the car,” Ruto explained. “When your orientation is as an evangelist, you always behave like an evangelist even when you are doing other things.”
President Ruto, who identifies as a committed Christian, has expressed his intention to return to evangelism after his political career concludes. He reaffirmed this commitment, which he first made public in 2019, stating that once his presidential duties are over, he plans to dedicate his life to spreading the gospel.
Ruto’s connection to the evangelical community dates back to his time as a student at the University of Nairobi, where he served as the leader of the Christian Union (CU). This role marked the beginning of his journey into politics, as he participated in delegations that paid homage to former President Daniel arap Moi. His political career later took off when he joined the YK92 movement, which campaigned for President Moi in the 1992 election.
In summary, Ruto’s actions and future aspirations are deeply intertwined with his faith, reflecting a life guided by a calling he intends to fulfill both in and out of the political arena.
