Patricia Too: I rejected Italian dream Job to become A County commissioner at 25 in Kenya

Not many people would turn down a fully funded scholarship offering the chance to migrate to Europe, but this is exactly what 25-year-old Patricia Too chose to do.

Her decision, however, has paid off. Today, Patricia is an Assistant County Commissioner in Kakamega County.

It all began when Patricia received a fully funded scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree. This opportunity arrived just after she had participated in the October 2021 government recruitment, where she emerged as one of the youngest individuals selected as an Assistant County Commissioner.

Before she had time to fully process the excitement of her selection, Patricia was notified that she had secured a scholarship to pursue a Master’s in ICT for Internet and Multimedia at the University of Padua in Italy.

“If someone had told me earlier this year that I would turn down a fully funded scholarship to study my Masters in Italy, I would have laughed. It would have seemed like a dream come true,” she confessed.

Faced with a tough decision, Patricia chose to stay and serve Kenya.

“If you had told me I’d be an Assistant County Commissioner this year, I would’ve laughed it off. But here I am—your village girl now holding this position,” she said.

Patricia’s choice, according to her, was driven by her desire to demonstrate that young leaders can drive the country forward.

Her LinkedIn profile reveals a strong background in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), a field she sacrificed for her greater aspirations.

Patricia attended Kenya High School from 2011 to 2014, earning a B+ in her KCSE exams. In 2015, she enrolled at Rongo University, where she pursued a degree in ICT. After graduating in 2019, Patricia started her career as an intern with the Ministry of Interior’s Immigration Department. She later served as an ICT Intern at the Office of the President for three months.

Patricia then joined the ICT department at the Public Service Commission, before finally being deployed to Kakamega County with the Ministry of Interior, where she now serves as Assistant County Commissioner.
