Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has lauded the solidarity shown by Kenyan TikTokers who turned out in large numbers in Othaya, Nyeri, to support Kaluma — a young boy who has been single-handedly caring for his father, who is battling a stroke.
Kaluma, who works on a local farm to cover medical expenses, had only invited a few well-wishers to his home. However, TikTokers mobilized an overwhelming response, arriving in a convoy of vehicles with food, clothing, money, and other essential supplies.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kuria hailed the gesture as a reflection of a new spirit among Kenyan youth.
Moses Kuria wrote:
“The solidarity young people are giving to Content Creator Kaluma Boy in Othaya today is symptomatic of the new Republic. Young people of this country have moved on without us. We are like that spare wheel at the back of a Land Rover. Smell the coffee wazee wenzangu. We lost our deposit!”
“This is what Kenya is all about,” Kuria added. “May God bless his family and everyone who showed up, including those who couldn’t but still supported him.”
The story of Kaluma not only highlights the resilience of young caregivers but also the power of community in a digital age, where social media mobilization can turn personal struggles into nationwide acts of compassion.
