Nancy Kigunzu, a prominent businesswoman widely recognized as ‘Mathe wa Ngara’ within local circles, has been released on a cash bail of Ksh.1 million in connection with the ongoing drug trafficking case against her.
The Nairobi Court, in its decision on Wednesday, mandated Kigunzu to surrender her passport to the court as part of the conditions for her release.
The moniker ‘Mathe wa Ngara’ gained attention after Kigunzu’s arrest on August 21, relating to a drug seizure in Nairobi’s Ngara area. The operation led to the confiscation of significant quantities of cannabis and Ksh.13.4 million in cash.
Following her arrest, Kigunzu’s initial bail request was denied two weeks later, with concerns raised about her being a flight risk due to her alleged involvement in drug trafficking.
In her bond application, Kigunzu cited an underlying medical condition that necessitated constant monitoring and medication. She argued that denial of bail would exacerbate her health condition. However, Magistrate Njeri Thuku ultimately ruled against granting her bail, asserting that it was not in the best interests of justice.
