Martha Katana: Meet The rich, watchful & controlling mum of ‘Becky’ series

Martha Katana, also known as Monica Wairimu Thang’a, has mesmerized audiences with her exceptional acting skills, particularly in her role on the widely acclaimed Citizen TV series ‘Becky.’

Her journey from modest beginnings to achieving widespread recognition in Kenya’s film industry is truly inspirational.

Monica Wairimu’s entry into the world of acting began unexpectedly two decades ago, guided by a friend who recognized her potential. Seizing the opportunity, she auditioned for the ‘Beba Beba’ show, and her talent earned her a role in the celebrated series, marking the commencement of her acting career.

Reflecting on her start, she revealed, “I started acting during my time in High School in Limuru. Then, I fully immersed myself in it 20 years ago. The first TV drama series I featured in was the renowned ‘Beba Beba’ show aired on NTV.”

Over the years, Martha’s versatility and skill have led her to various roles in Kenyan films such as ‘Igiza,’ opening doors for collaborations with prestigious brands like DSTV and M-Net.

Monica Wairimu’s Role in ‘Becky’ played a pivotal role in propelling her to stardom. Portraying the character of a fiercely protective African mother dedicated to safeguarding her two children, Junior and Sally, Monica garnered widespread admiration for her portrayal of the complex villain.

Contrary to her on-screen persona, Martha emphasized that her real-life demeanor is gentle and reserved. She clarified, “Surprisingly in real life, I am not harsh. Many people, judging by my face, think I am stern, but deep down, I am a very gentle person. I portray that character on TV because it’s my role. That’s my job.”

Despite her success in acting, Martha remains grounded and considers acting a part-time pursuit. Her primary dedication lies in her role as an educator, teaching kindergarten children aged 16 months to six years. Despite the demands of her acting career, Martha finds fulfillment in nurturing young minds.

In her private life, Martha values her privacy and leads a quiet off-screen existence. In addition to her acting and teaching commitments, she is also undergoing training to become a psychologist. Monica Wairimu is a devoted mother to two daughters and takes pride in being a grandmother.
