Former Kakamega Woman Representative aspirant Elsie Muhanda has revealed that the late businessman and political powerbroker Cyrus Jirongo had endorsed her to vie for the Kakamega governorship before his death.

Speaking during a public engagement, Muhanda said Jirongo openly urged the people of Kakamega to support her leadership, arguing that the county was ready for a woman governor.

According to her, Jirongo believed she had the capacity, vision, and leadership qualities needed to steer Kakamega County forward. She described the late tycoon as a bold leader who was not afraid to challenge traditional political norms, including the long-held belief that top county leadership should be dominated by men.

Muhanda’s remarks have reignited conversations around women leadership in Kakamega, a county that has never elected a female governor. Supporters argue that her revelation reflects growing recognition of women leaders, while critics view it as part of early political positioning ahead of future elections.

Cyrus Jirongo, who passed away in 2023, was known for his strong influence in Western Kenya politics and for mentoring several leaders in the region. His reported endorsement of Muhanda adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape in Kakamega County.
