Justin Muturi’s son detained amid controversy over Finance Bill protests in Nairobi

Lesley Muturi, the son of Attorney General Justin Muturi, was reportedly abducted by individuals suspected to be police officers in Kilimani, Nairobi, on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Embakasi West MP and National Assembly Minority Deputy Whip Mark Mwenje confirmed the abduction, stating that he witnessed the incident. In a video circulating online, Mwenje explained that he was following Lesley Muturi when unidentified individuals in plain clothes intercepted Muturi’s car, forcibly removed him from the vehicle, and drove away with him.

“My friend Lesley, the son of AG Justin Muturi, has just been hijacked by the police here on the road. I was the one following him. This is his car; the police have taken him. We are here, and we are going to find you guys,” Mwenje said.

Mwenje asserted that the abductors were police officers traveling in a Land Cruiser. In the viral videos, he emphasized, “The individuals who took Lesley Muturi were police officers.” He described the vehicle as an older model white Land Cruiser and noted that the individuals were dressed in black and appeared to be in combat gear.

Mwenje, closely associated with the Attorney General’s son, recently took a significant stance by voting against the controversial Finance Bill of 2024, reflecting his opposition to certain provisions within the bill.

Meanwhile, Kenyan content creator Billy Simani, popularly known as ‘Crazy Nairobian,’ was released on Saturday, June 22, 2024, after hours of detention by the police. His release came a day after several human rights associations of content creators, lawyers, medical officers, and human rights defenders across the country called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to clarify Simani’s whereabouts. The intervention of Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo facilitated his release.
