The swift response of the Kenyan government to the tragic demise of promising athlete Kelvin Kiptum included the construction of a residence for his grieving family. Kiptum lost his life in a solitary vehicle accident on February 11, 2024, leaving behind his mourning loved ones.
Amidst the sorrow, the government promptly took affirmative steps to address the fact that Kiptum, despite his athletic achievements, did not have a permanent home for his family. Acknowledging the significance of providing stability and support during this challenging time, President William Ruto initiated the construction of a house for the Kiptum family and set an ambitious seven-day timeline for its completion.
Photographs chronicling the entire construction process, from inception to the final furnishing, highlight the dedication and meticulous attention invested in the project. The house was predominantly constructed using steel beams, cement boards, and plywood, featuring a suspended foundation and iron sheet roofing.
A notable feature of the newly built home is its expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, providing abundant natural light and creating an open atmosphere in the living space. In contrast to typical Kenyan homes, these windows lack burglar-proof grills. Upon entering the residence, visitors are welcomed by an inviting open-plan living room and kitchen area. The predominant beige theme in both furnishings and décor imparts warmth and tranquility, offering a comforting refuge for the grieving family.
Despite its modest size, the kitchen is intelligently designed, considering limited counter space to accommodate the practical constraints of the available floor area. The house includes a master bedroom adorned with soft hues and a cozy ambiance, serving as a serene retreat for Kiptum’s widow. Adjacent to it is a presumed children’s bedroom, complete with a double-decker bed.
In addition to providing a home for the Kiptum family, the government is actively planning to construct a house for the late athlete’s father, showcasing a comprehensive approach to supporting bereaved families.
