In the town of Webuye, located in western Kenya, the community was left astounded when a 32-year-old man, Kelvin Waliuba, revealed that he had impregnated his 43-year-old mother-in-law. The confession came from Waliuba’s wife, Ms. Nekesa, who acknowledged that her husband did not deny engaging in a sexual relationship with her mother.
Nekesa explained that she took on the responsibility of asking her mother to assist in caring for their newborn child. As a full-time employee with limited financial resources for hiring domestic help, she invited her mother to provide support while she made arrangements to secure a house helper.
Reports indicate that Waliuba, employed as a gardener at a nearby school, allegedly conducted clandestine affairs with his mother-in-law whenever his wife went to the market for groceries. Nekesa expressed her dismay, stating that her mother justified her actions by claiming to be single and, therefore, saw no issue with the situation.
Quoting the mother-in-law, she shared, “I am not married, and I was going through a really tough dry spell. I found it difficult to turn down Kelvin’s advances.” In response to this unconventional situation, Luhya elders are currently organizing a cleansing ceremony for the family, considering it a significant taboo.
