Dr. Hudson Alakonya, a Kenyan doctor, made history on Tuesday, May 23, by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Oncology. This specialized field of medicine focuses on the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer.

Alakonya’s achievement makes him the first Kenyan to attain this prestigious level of academic success, earning widespread admiration from his fellow countrymen.

“I am overjoyed and thankful to present to Kenya the first Doctor of Philosophy in Oncology from the University of Oxford,” he said. “This milestone would not have been possible without the generosity and guidance of many people, to whom I owe my deepest gratitude.”

Before traveling to the United Kingdom to pursue his PhD, Alakonya had already earned a Master of Science (MSc) in Cancer. He also held a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree in Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).

He extended special thanks to his supervisor, Prof. Bart Cornelissen, and the members of the Cornelissen Lab at Oxford, praising their support and kindness throughout his academic journey.

In 2018, Alakonya founded the Integrated Cancer Research Foundation (ICRF) in Kenya, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing oncology research. The foundation’s mission is to use evidence-based research to address the life-threatening nature of cancer.

Alakonya also expressed deep gratitude to his family and the members of ICRF for their steadfast support throughout his academic career. Furthermore, he acknowledged the Rhodes Trust, which awarded him a scholarship that played a key role in his success.

“I am sincerely indebted to the Rhodes Trust for granting me the Rhodes scholarship, which not only helped me achieve my academic and professional goals but also connected me to the world and transformed my socioeconomic life,” he remarked.
