Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has taken aim at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, criticizing what he described as the ex-DP’s “inexperienced” approach to politics.
In a statement shared online, Wambugu questioned Gachagua’s recent move to publicly urge Kenyans to gather at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to welcome him back from his U.S. trip. He contrasted this with veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, who, according to him, has mastered the art of political mobilization without direct public announcements.
“Has Gachagua ever seen Raila ask people to ‘come and receive’ him at the airport? Raila uses quiet mobilization and surprise, not public announcements,” Wambugu remarked.
Gachagua had initially planned to remain in the U.S. until later this month but cut short his trip to spearhead campaigns in several upcoming by-elections. While abroad, he engaged with Kenyans in the diaspora and promoted what he calls the “Wantam Movement,” a political push he believes is gaining traction nationwide.
Wambugu, however, insists that the former deputy president’s reliance on open calls for support reflects a lack of strategic finesse. He argued that seasoned leaders like Raila often showcase their political muscle through surprise mobilizations that catch rivals off guard, rather than telegraphing their moves in advance.
