“Girls Should Know That You Cannot Start From The Top”- Sabina Chege On Femicide In Kenya.

In a recent interview with Gukena FM, Sabina Chege, a Nominated Member of Parliament, shared her perspective on the efficacy of street protests as a means to combat femicide. While acknowledging the commendable efforts behind such demonstrations, Chege emphasized the necessity for a more targeted and strategic approach to effect lasting change.

Chege stressed the importance of engaging the right audience and initiating dialogues, suggesting that canceling and talking to individuals could be a more effective method. She proposed creating forums where girls can share their stories and have meaningful conversations with those who can provide guidance.

While acknowledging the impact of recent marches on January 27, Chege expressed the view that marching in town primarily attracts those already aware of the cause. She recommended reaching out to educational institutions, especially universities and colleges, to directly engage with young women in hostels and raise awareness more effectively.

Chege criticized the limited communication achieved through protests on the streets, proposing a shift towards engaging with girls in universities, colleges, and hostel-dwelling communities. She highlighted the importance of mentorship programs as a crucial strategy to address femicide, emphasizing the need for support systems for girls who have experienced or are at risk of falling victim to such violence.

The politician advocated for the establishment of counseling centers and programs by protesters to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by these girls and the reasons behind their vulnerability to femicide.

Sabina Chege also urged young women to focus on empowerment and personal development, emphasizing the significance of hard work over a hasty pursuit of financial gain. She advised against expecting quick success and cautioned against the allure of easy money, emphasizing the eventual costs associated with such shortcuts.
