On April 15, 2023, Mary Njeri, a Kenyan national, was apprehended by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) of Ghana for attempting to smuggle cocaine. The interception occurred at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra during a standard screening at the arrival hall. Njeri had arrived in Ghana via Johannesburg on a South African Airways flight from Nairobi.
NACOC’s statement indicated that Njeri was carrying 11.04 kilograms of suspected cocaine valued at Sh41 million ($309,120). Upon inspection of her luggage, Cremora food packages were discovered to be concealing the drugs. Njeri admitted to possessing the contraband, and she was taken into custody for further investigation.
The confiscated substances were sent to the Ghana Standard Authority (GSA) for examination and a report, while Njeri remains detained in jail pending ongoing investigation and prosecution.
NACOC reminded the public that unauthorized possession and transportation of illicit drugs is illegal and punishable under sections 40 (1) and 41 (1) of Act 1019 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020.
