Wedding Bells in Parliament as MP Proposes to Murang’a Woman Rep

In a historic moment in Kenyan politics, two Members of Parliament who are currently serving are set to tie the knot later this year. Over the weekend, Eric wa Mumbi, who represents Mathira, proposed to Betty Maina, the Woman Representative for Murang’a.

The couple shared the news on social media, with Eric captioning pictures of the proposal with the words: “And out of love, she said yes!” Betty also posted a picture of her engagement ring and expressed gratitude for the wonderful surprise, writing: “One day at a time sweet Jesus. He makes all things beautiful in his own time. Thanks my sisters for organising this wonderful surprise. My dear Eric, you rock!”

During an interview on Inooro TV on Monday, Eric announced that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would lead the delegation from Mathira to negotiate the bride price with Betty’s delegation from Murang’a. Ndindi Nyoro, the MP for Kiharu, will host the ceremony on behalf of Ms Maina’s delegation.

The couple met in 2021, and Eric described his soon-to-be wife as “sweet, lovely and kind”, adding that she had everything he wanted in a wife. They started dating and decided to formalise their union during the run-up to the August 9 General Election. Eric expressed his excitement for the upcoming nuptials and said, “This week I will be in Murang’a for preliminary planning before the big day when I will descend on this land of my love in a manner that will make all envious.”
