The Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi has come under scrutiny after reports surfaced that it denied entry to protesters seeking shelter from police during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.
In response to the criticism, the church issued a statement explaining its decision, emphasizing the safety and well-being of students attending the Holy Family Minor Basilica Catholic Parochial School on its premises.
According to Most Reverend Philip Anyolo, the Basilica’s priority is ensuring the safety of the young children at the school. “The compound hosts a school, and our personnel consistently ensure the safety of the young children. The Church also upholds its duty of care for the students,” the statement read.
The Basilica acknowledged concerns raised on social media and expressed sympathy for those affected by the situation. It reiterated its commitment to being a sanctuary for all, including Kenyans in general.
While regretting any misunderstandings stemming from the incident amid the Finance Bill 2024 protests, the Basilica vowed to continue its role as a place of worship and sanctuary.
Furthermore, the church expressed solidarity with all individuals advocating for a better future for Kenyans. “We appreciate your understanding and stand in solidarity with all those striving for a better future for all Kenyans,” concluded the statement.
