Eunice Otieng: Boda Boda Woman Who Built Her Multi-Million House and Rental Rooms in the Village

In 2017, the life of Eunice Otieng’ underwent a profound transformation, steering her onto an unexpected path.

Confronted with a series of formidable challenges, Eunice not only conquered adversity but also reshaped her life in ways she had never envisioned. Her remarkable journey stands as a testament to resilience and an inspiration for anyone grappling with hardships.

Eunice’s tribulations commenced when her husband left her for another woman. As a devoted wife and mother, she found herself not only heartbroken but also burdened by substantial loans she had taken on behalf of her spouse during their marriage. The situation worsened when she and her young daughter were evicted from their home due to unpaid rent arrears accumulated over several months, presenting a dire circumstance that could have shattered even the strongest of spirits.

Nevertheless, Eunice exhibited unwavering strength. Instead of succumbing to despair, she tapped into her inner resilience. With meager earnings from her nursing job and a growing pile of debts, she made a conscious decision to rebuild her life from the ground up, recognizing the imperative to secure a better future for herself and her daughter.

“I almost ran mad with my small salary. I had no option but to think about how to start life from scratch,” reflected Eunice.

Undeterred, she embarked on a daring venture as a boda boda rider, utilizing her motorcycle for this new endeavor. Balancing her nursing job during the day, she dedicated her free time to this side hustle. The journey was arduous, with Eunice meticulously managing her finances, prioritizing her nursing income for loan repayments.

Her determination and hard work bore fruit as she saved Sh. 26,000, serving as the seed capital for her next venture. Possessing a piece of land acquired wisely before her marriage, Eunice envisioned building her dream home and multiple rental houses on the property. Fueled by her commitment to providing her daughter with a better life, she channeled her anger into transformative action.

“I decided that I will work hard for my baby to get the best. I think I was working with a lot of anger to change my life. That’s why I was able to finish the house,” shared Eunice with pride.

In a remarkable gesture, Eunice bestowed upon her five-year-old daughter the role of a landlady, gifting her one of the rental properties. This act transcended mere financial security; it symbolized the wiping away of tears shed when their former landlord locked them out of their home, signifying a fresh start and a brighter future.
