Kenyans are being urged to brace themselves for an impending deluge that is expected to persist until Thursday. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rainfall is slated to commence on Saturday and conclude at 6 pm on April 18, 2024.
The forecast predicts that the downpour will primarily affect various regions, encompassing the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands both to the west and east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Coast, and the northern sector.
Specifically, on April 14, 2024, these areas are anticipated to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 40mm within a 24-hour period. Moreover, the intensity of the rainfall is projected to escalate from April 15 to 18, 2024, with the coastal regions expected to witness rainfall exceeding 50mm in 24 hours.
David Gikungu, the Director of Meteorological Services, cautioned about the likelihood of accompanying phenomena such as gusty winds, significant ocean waves, and robust southerly winds in the Southeastern region. He identified several counties that should remain vigilant against potential floods, flash floods, and reduced visibility.
These counties include Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West-Pokot, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Garissa, and Isiolo.
Gikungu emphasized the possibility of floodwaters appearing unexpectedly, particularly downstream from heavily affected areas. He advised residents to refrain from driving or walking through moving water, avoid seeking shelter under trees, and steer clear of grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
The Meteorological Department has introduced a new mobile application, FASTA (Forecasting African Storms Application), to keep Kenyans informed about impending storms. This application provides real-time updates on weather conditions, including live displays of storm activity and rainfall patterns, enabling users to make informed decisions in the face of inclement weather.
This initiative comes at a critical juncture as the country grapples with the aftermath of heavy rainfall, which has caused widespread destruction in its wake.
