Normal learning was thrown into disarray at Koiyet Secondary School in Bomet County after a 19-year-old student gave birth in the school toilet and abandoned her newborn in a pit latrine before heading back to class.
According to Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo, the school principal raised the alarm after the girl was spotted bleeding excessively while seated in class. Concerned classmates quickly informed the teacher on duty, prompting immediate action.
“The teacher on duty rushed to the class and found that the student had given birth after visiting the toilet but attempted to conceal it,” Analo confirmed.
Realizing the gravity of the situation, the school administration, with help from locals, swiftly mobilized efforts to retrieve the baby from the pit latrine. Both the mother and child were taken to Sigor Sub-County Hospital for emergency care before being transferred to Longisa County Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the shocking incident, as concerns grow over teenage pregnancies and the need for improved support systems within schools.
