Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called out the government following his visit to Kenyatta National Hospital, where several victims of police brutality are currently receiving treatment. According to the legislator, the scale and nature of injuries sustained by the young demonstrators point to calculated violence, not crowd control.
Sixteen protesters were brought to the facility with various injuries. While nine have been discharged, seven remain in the wards—two of them in critical condition. Among them is 22-year-old Boniface Kariuki, the hawker whose shooting in broad daylight by anti-riot police has triggered national outrage.
Owino described the scene at the hospital as harrowing, highlighting cases of multiple gunshot wounds, including to the back, eye, neck, and legs. He stressed that these injuries are indicative of deliberate targeting, not accidental outcomes of chaotic protests.
The MP blamed the violent crackdown on high-level directives, suggesting that the silence from the presidency amounts to complicity. He demanded that President William Ruto take responsibility for what he termed state-sponsored violence against unarmed citizens.
Owino also insisted that the right to peaceful assembly is protected by the Constitution and must never be met with bullets. He maintained that the use of lethal force on demonstrators was not only unlawful but also deeply immoral in a democratic society.
The Embakasi East legislator pledged to continue standing with victims and their families and affirmed that calls for justice would persist until those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
