Awinja: Why I Have Small Hips Compared to Other Luyha Ladies

Comedienne and actress Jacky Vike, popularly known as Awinja, recently shared a humorous insight into the reason behind her relatively smaller hips compared to her counterparts from the western region.

In a lighthearted conversation with Oga Obinna, Awinja playfully attributed her petite hips to her frequent childhood travels to her rural home. Born in Nairobi, she reminisced about the countless trips to the village mandated by her father during holidays and school breaks. Fondly recalling the bygone era of Kabiet Escort buses, precursors to modern ones like Ugwe, Homeboys, and Eldoret Express, she explained that the peculiar design of these older buses, with the engine inside, subjected passengers to intense heat. Awinja humorously asserted, “That’s why I have small hips.”

Underlining the arduous nature of these journeys, she highlighted that in those days, even the shortest trip would take around 8 hours, with departures at 5 in the morning culminating in late afternoon arrivals. Awinja contrasted the past with the present, noting that contemporary travel takes about 6 hours.

The actress went on to express her sentiment that the pleasure of traveling to the countryside by bus is distinct from flying, drawing a comparison between domestic rural trips and international flights. Reflecting on her last experience using public transportation to visit her village earlier in the year, she emphasized the unique charm of bus travel, asserting that one cannot replicate the same experience by flying to Europe and then back to the village. Awinja concluded by sharing a recent bus journey for leisure with Shix (Kapienga), humorously recounting the bumpy ride at the back of the bus until they reached their destination.
