Former Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has praised former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, describing him as a serious and focused leader capable of helping steer Kenya in the right direction.
Speaking during a recent political event, Kioni noted that Matiang’i is known for his tough demeanor and no-nonsense approach to leadership, qualities he said are essential for guiding the country through its current challenges.
“Matiang’i is a person known who smiles not often, but he’s a person who can help us guide this country going forward — because si wakati wa kucheka!” Kioni said.
(Translation: “Matiang’i is not someone who smiles often, but he’s the kind of leader who can help guide the nation forward — this is not the time for laughter!”)
Kioni’s remarks have drawn reactions from Kenyans online, with many interpreting them as a hint that Matiang’i could play a key political role in the coming years. Some have linked the comments to renewed efforts to revive opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dr. Matiang’i, who served in the powerful Interior Ministry during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has largely kept a low political profile since leaving office, though his name often surfaces in discussions about future leadership prospects.
Kioni emphasized that Kenya needs firm and disciplined leadership rather than populism, suggesting that leaders like Matiang’i could help restore order, accountability, and stability in governance.
