‘Mke Mwema’ Terence Creative: My wife paid 99% of bills for years before my success

Kenyan content creator and comedian Terence Creative recently shared a heartfelt post on Instagram, expressing gratitude to his wife, Milly Chebby, for standing by him during the financially challenging early stages of their relationship.

In his post, Terence revealed that Milly covered up to 98.9% of their shared expenses, emphasizing that there should be no shame in a girlfriend financially supporting her boyfriend during tough times. This act of support, commonly referred to as ‘Kuwekwa’ in Kenyan slang, was central to his message.

“Ladies, if he is not financially stable and you are, support him and respect him until he stabilizes. Give him your money as the head of the house for management. Usianike mume wako mbele ya watu (Don’t embarrass your husband in public),” Terence wrote on Instagram.

Terence’s remarks were sparked by Alma Mutheu’s recent revelation on Obinna TV. Alma disclosed that she had been financially supporting her boyfriend for the three years they had been dating. Terence weighed in, advising women to entrust their partners with financial management and to avoid publicly shaming them. Instead, he encouraged perseverance and unity during financially strained periods, assuring that stability and reciprocity would eventually follow.

“Mimi niliwekwa for 4 years plus. My then-girlfriend, Milly Chebby, who is now my wife of 11 years, used to pay 98.9% of all our bills. Wacheni kuanika waume zenu (Stop exposing your men). There will come a day when they will be stable and will take care of you. For now, persevere and encourage him to work hard,” Terence shared.

In a related discussion, Alma Mutheu opened up about her frustrations with her boyfriend, Gift Musiq, whom she has been supporting financially. Speaking on Obinna TV, Alma admitted that the financial burden had caused numerous arguments between them.

“It gets to a point where, as a woman, you get tired of providing everything. We’ve had many arguments because of financial issues,” she said.

Gift Musiq, responding to Alma’s comments, acknowledged the challenges but maintained a positive outlook. He expressed gratitude for Alma’s support and revealed that her concerns motivate him to strive for self-improvement.

“I know people will talk, but no one knows how far Alma Mutheu and I have come. She is very supportive, and I appreciate her pushing me to do better. I didn’t take it negatively,” he said.

Public Reactions

Terence Creative’s perspective sparked diverse reactions on social media. While some applauded his advice, others, particularly women, viewed the notion of financially supporting a man as a risky endeavor. Below are some of the notable comments:

Caroll Radull: “A good man is a good man and is worth supporting/investing in. But ladies, support a bad man at your own risk. Speaking for a friend.”

Lizzy Khairu: “I did that in my marriage for 8 years, only to discover he was using the resources to plan and move in with the love of his life. Never again!”

While Terence Creative’s story highlights the power of resilience and mutual support in relationships, the mixed reactions underscore the need for caution and discernment. Supporting a partner during difficult times can strengthen the bond, but it’s essential to ensure that the relationship is built on mutual respect and shared values.
