On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended a member of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stationed in Nyeri. The arrest was made on allegations that the officer had solicited a bribe of Ksh10,000 from a local resident who had fallen victim to fraudsters, losing over Sh110,000 in the process.
According to a statement released by the EACC, the resident had approached the DCI officer seeking assistance in recovering the funds stolen through Mpesa fraud. Subsequently, the officer demanded the bribe, claiming it was necessary to expedite the tracking of the fraudsters. The arrested officer, identified as Luke Nyasangah and stationed at Ngano Police Station in Nyandaraua County, has been detained at Charagita Police Post pending further legal procedures.
This arrest forms part of the EACC’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and recover stolen assets across the country. In a recent case on April 1, the High Court ruled that Isiolo County officials refund Ksh7,220,000 acquired through fraudulent procurement practices. The EACC had filed a case against Isiolo County officials, including two Chief Officers and the Governor’s Personal Assistant, seeking the return of misappropriated public funds.
Similarly, on February 24, 2024, the EACC identified irregularities within the County Government of Taita Taveta, recommending the prosecution of suspects. The report revealed that County Assembly leadership and Members of County Assembly (MCAs) had misappropriated public funds amounting to over Ksh7 million. The funds were utilized for a bonding and leisure trip to Zanzibar, where some MCAs were overpaid, and others received allowances without undertaking the journey.
