AWINJA: My Dad worked as Cobbler and Mjengo Man, But I worked Hard to be a TV STAR

Jacky Vike, popularly recognized as Awinja Nyamwalo, stands out as one of Kenya’s premier content creators.

Recently, the gifted comedian provided Kenyans with a glimpse into her upbringing and the extraordinary lengths her father went to in raising her.

Awinja conveyed a heartfelt message on her Instagram on a Sunday, celebrating her late father. In her poignant message, she expressed regret at his premature departure and yearned for him to witness her current success.

The accomplished actress acknowledged her father’s unwavering dedication to providing for the family. She revealed that despite his full-time job as a County Askari, he often engaged in side hustles to meet the family’s needs.

Her father, employed as a County Askari, faced challenges of delayed payments, prompting him to take on additional roles such as cobbling and working on construction sites.

“My dad worked as a County Askari, and there were months without pay, but he would engage in side hustles like cobbling and construction work,” Awinja shared.

Jacky Vicky also reminisced about her father’s fondness for traditional brew. She recounted moments when he would visit construction sites or local drinking spots in Shauri Moyo for a taste of traditional brew. Awinja expressed a wish that her father were alive today to enjoy a quality crate of Tusker beer.

“I will never forget when one of those alcohol trucks crashed near Kije, and we went to pick up bottles of alcohol. We later started flaunting them to neighborhood kids, saying, ‘My dad has picked up more bottles than yours!'” recounted Awinja.

Jacky Vicky’s journey to fame began when she featured on the popular Citizen TV show “Papa Shirandula,” where the late Charles Bukeko (Papa Shirandula) recognized her acting talent during auditions.

Following the conclusion of “Papa Shirandula,” Awinja ventured into various forms of entertainment. She created humorous skits, sharing them on her social media platforms.

Awinja has since become one of the most sought-after celebrities, attracting partnerships with major brands. In 2022, she collaborated with prominent companies such as East Africa Breweries, Exe Unga, Naivas Supermarket, among others.

Notably, she was part of the group of celebrities sponsored by Odibets for the Qatar FIFA World Cup in 2022.
