Kalekye Mumo: My mother warned me against marrying men from Western Kenya Ata kama Mjulus ni Tamu

Media personality Kalekye Mumo has revealed that her mother once cautioned her against marrying men from the Western Kenya region. Discussing stereotypes, the former radio and TV presenter shared that her mother strongly advised her to consider marrying someone of Indian descent instead of men from the two specific communities. According to her mother, the people from those communities are different, and their language is not easily understood.

Kalekye expressed how this advice lingered in her mind, leading her to inquire about people’s origins based on her mother’s counsel from her youth. Whenever she questioned her mother about this preference, she was told that even her grandmother had advised against marrying from those communities.

Recalling her mother’s words, Kalekye quoted, “My mum told me once, never bring a man from the Western region into this house. It’s better to marry someone of Indian descent. She said what she knows about those people is that you can’t understand them, what they speak, they are different, you can’t.”

Despite these warnings, Kalekye clarified that she won’t let it hinder her from dating individuals from the mentioned region. She emphasized that her primary interest lies in getting to know the person as an individual, asserting that each home is unique.

She stated, “I will still date them; I will still get to know them. But in getting to know them, I’m more interested in you as a person. That doesn’t say anything about the tribe; that doesn’t mean just because you come from that area, you are a certain way because every different home is different.”
