”Mimi nitakuambia ukweli na sikuogopi, wewe ni muongo sana,” Furious Kalenjin lady confronts Governor Bii and Senator Mandago over scholarship row saga

The recent viral video featuring a student from Uasin Gishu University who delivered a speech to county executives during a conference in Eldoret has sparked considerable discussion. In an interview with KTN News on Tuesday, 24-year-old Mercy Tarus shed light on her intentions and perspective regarding the incident.

Tarus, who was affected by the educational scandal in Finland, emphasized that her intention was not to come across as impolite. Instead, she asserted that her aim was to hold the authorities accountable for their actions. The incident, which gained significant attention, exposed the underlying issues within the education system.

In her conversation with KTN News, Tarus explained, “I was not displaying rudeness; my primary goal was to seek accountability from our leaders. I was unaware that the video had reached such a wide audience. My intention was to address concerns about financial compensation – a matter important to me as I juggle hairdressing and weekend sales of porridge and mandazis.”

She went on to characterize the situation as a blatant act of injustice committed by elected officials who were entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the well-being of the public. Tarus criticized, “We are being robbed in broad daylight by those who hold positions of power, utilizing government resources and authority to exploit us. How can we aspire for a better future when our aspirations are crushed by the very individuals we elected?”

Tarus directed her words towards the attending leaders – Governor Jonathan Bii, Deputy John Barorot, and Senator Jackson Mandagor – during a meeting with students and parents. Her frustration was evident as she questioned their tardiness, which left elderly parents waiting for hours due to the delayed 9 am start time.

She highlighted the plight of students affected by the education crisis, pointing out that some were resorting to antidepressants as a result of the distress. Meanwhile, she contrasted this with the success of these leaders’ own children studying abroad.

In response to public concern, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) addressed the ongoing investigation into the Finland scholarship scandal. Eric Ngumbi, the EACC Director of Communications, assured the public that the investigation, initiated in March 2023, is being expedited to provide justice swiftly given the significant public interest.

In conclusion, the speech delivered by Mercy Tarus at the conference shed light on pressing issues within the education system and the accountability of elected officials. Her impassioned plea for justice and transparency resonated with many, prompting a renewed focus on addressing these challenges. The EACC’s commitment to a thorough investigation is indicative of the seriousness with which these matters are being pursued.
