I Scored A- In KCSE, Ended Up Being Employed As A Watchman – The Inspiring Story Of 2mbili

If you are familiar with Kenya’s stand-up comedy scene, then you must be acquainted with the renowned comedian 2mbili. Over the past few years, he has emerged as a prominent figure in the comedy industry and has garnered a significant following.

2mbili’s journey to success is truly inspiring, considering the challenges he has overcome. From enduring the hardships of being an Internally Displaced Person (IDP) to facing the harsh realities of street life, he has managed to establish a name for himself. Today, he runs his own YouTube channel called 2mbili TV, where he consistently uploads engaging and entertaining videos.

In a recent interview with Murangagossips, 2mbili shared insights into his comedy journey and how he eventually landed his own show, the immensely popular Celeb Ride. Let’s delve into his story.

Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background?

My name is 2mbili, and I am a stand-up comedian, content creator, TV and radio host, as well as a parent.

Many people first discovered you during the pandemic. How was that experience for you?

Surprisingly, the pandemic turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me. During this time, I started doing virtual shows and stand-up performances, receiving tips from our audience. Additionally, I dabbled in TV and radio hosting. The pandemic provided ample opportunities for me to explore my creativity and expand my horizons.

I also took the chance to launch my YouTube channel, which has been performing exceptionally well. I am genuinely grateful for the traction we have gained since the show’s inception. Initially, it was an experimental venture, but the positive reception has been overwhelming.

Before achieving success in this field, I experienced profound despair and extreme poverty. Despite scoring an A- in my KCSE exams, I found myself doing odd jobs, working as a watchman, and even living on the streets. I am immensely thankful that despite these challenges, I managed to find my way and create a meaningful life for myself and my family.

It seems you share a close bond with former comedian Jalang’o. Could you tell us more about that?

My relationship with Jalang’o is incredibly strong, as I consider him an elder brother figure in my life. I vividly recall vowing to sell my kidneys to support his campaign.

During my destitute days, I often sought assistance from him while he was working at Milele FM, and he always came through for me. For that, I am eternally grateful.

How would you describe your journey as a comedian in Kenya?

It has not been an easy journey, particularly in the beginning when I relied on other people’s shows to make ends meet. However, I believe the industry has significantly transformed since then. Nowadays, almost every comedian, if not all, has their own YouTube channel where they showcase their content. This shift has allowed us to form a tight-knit community centered around our unique comedy styles.

However, stand-up comedy seems to be losing its stronghold. The country no longer hosts as many stand-up comedy events, and numerous comedians have shifted their focus to other forms of comedy, such as acting.

What advice do you have for young individuals aspiring to succeed in this field?

First and foremost, I prioritize survival. I take care of my own needs and those of my family with the resources I have at present. My advice to young people is to resist societal pressure and the online pressures imposed by their seemingly wealthy peers. Personally, I support four households with my income, and I understand that comparing oneself to others solely for the sake of flaunting wealth online is futile. My advice is to live within your means while striving towards your goals.
