Lewis Ndichu, a Kenyan engineer, had no idea that a small act of kindness would lead to a multimillion-dollar project. His daily commute from Limuru Road via Muthaiga to Thika Road involved giving lifts to security guards from UN offices and residences along the way who were trying to make a living.
One day, a security guard named Otis asked Lewis why he always gave them lifts. Lewis replied that they were all trying to make a living, and the only difference was the car he drove. This led to a friendship that eventually resulted in a life-changing opportunity for Lewis.
Being an engineer at Lewison Builders and Contractors, Lewis asked Otis if he knew anyone who needed construction work. Lewis gave Otis his business card and told him to contact him if he heard of any opportunities. Lewis also shared his business cards with the other people he carried in his car.
Months went by without any calls until one day, Lewis received a call from a Mzungu who wanted to meet him regarding a project. During the meeting, Lewis was surprised when the Mzungu told him that Otis had spoken very highly of him and recommended him for the project. Otis had worked at the site as a night guard, and his recommendation gave the client confidence in hiring Lewis.
From this experience, Lewis learned several lessons. Firstly, not all businesses come from networking coffee or wine meetings. Secondly, anyone can be a bridge to your success, so it’s essential to learn to interact with people. Thirdly, when you help others, God always returns the favor, and what you receive today, you gave some time back. Lastly, it’s crucial to be good, kind, and generous to everyone because you never know when God might use them.
Lewis promised himself that he would repay Otis by buying him a motorbike and giving his wife some money to start a business. This story shows that kindness and generosity can lead to significant opportunities in life, and we should always be ready to help others whenever we can.
