93-year-old Kisii man who traveled 50 years ago in search of better life returns with walking stick

A heartwarming red-carpet welcome was held in Masabo village, Kisii County, as the community joyfully reunited with a long-lost family member after decades of separation.

Samuel Abuga, now 93 years old, had been presumed dead during the Mau Mau War. Forty years ago, he left his family in search of a better life, never to return. His unexpected homecoming came as a shock to his family, who had long given up hope of ever seeing him again.

In preparation for his return, Abuga’s family arranged for his grandson, Enock Abuga, to travel to Makueni to bring him home. A piece of land had been reserved for Samuel, ensuring a place for him within the family. This reunion was nothing short of emotional, filled with heartfelt connections.

Masabo village came alive with excitement as its residents celebrated the return of their lost relative. The community even gave him a red-carpet welcome, making Samuel the focal point of the celebration.

Samuel had left his family four decades ago, seeking “greener pastures,” but never looked back. When Enock set out to fetch him, he first informed the local area chief, who asked about Samuel’s past. It was then revealed that Samuel was his grandfather.

“We left for Kisii, and I informed everyone back home. They began preparing for his arrival,” said Enock.

A granddaughter, who had married into the family, shared her joy at the reunion, recalling how she had always heard stories of an uncle who disappeared years ago. This moment was her chance to finally meet him.

“I’m so happy to see him alive. I’ve only ever heard stories about him leaving, and there were never any photos of him at home to remember him by,” said the granddaughter.
