When faced with life’s challenges, it’s tempting to surrender and accept defeat. However, echoing the wisdom of Les Brown, the key is to aim to land on your back because if you can look up, you can get up. Mary Wanjira Munyeki, also known as Cira wa Mitumba, exemplifies this philosophy, triumphing over setbacks and job loss in 2015.
Formerly employed as an account assistant, Cira turned to selling second-hand clothing when her company shuttered. Approaching a woman selling clothes in Gikomba, she forged a friendship that would change her life. Despite financial constraints preventing her from buying stock, Cira’s determination led her to request clothes on credit. Gradually, her business flourished, enabling her to import bales from the UK and Canada. Today, she manages a thriving second-hand clothing business with three employees.
Cira’s journey underscores the power of determination and perseverance, proving that success can arise from adversity. Beyond her personal achievements, she extends her hand to others, teaching single ladies and housewives how to generate income. By sharing bales of clothes, she helps them establish small businesses. Cira’s story serves as a poignant reminder that, regardless of life’s hardships, success is attainable if one remains resilient and looks upward.
