Tutakushika na Tukueke Jela, Ruto officials tell Gachagua for ‘fanning incitement to violence’

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a stern warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning him against making statements that could incite ethnic tensions or violence.

In a letter dated February 27, 2025, NCIC Chairperson Dr. Samuel Kobia addressed remarks made by Gachagua during a church service in Igembe North, Meru County, on February 23. Gachagua had alleged that President William Ruto was orchestrating the removal of Chief Justice Martha Koome due to her ethnicity. He further warned the President against visiting Meru County if the Chief Justice were ousted.

Dr. Kobia stated that such allegations are misleading and promote negative ethnicity, potentially inciting animosity among Kenyans and undermining peaceful coexistence. He emphasized that Gachagua’s warning to the President violates the constitutional right of the Head of State to visit any part of the country to perform official duties.

The NCIC urged Gachagua to exercise restraint and avoid utterances that could be construed as propaganda for war, incitement to violence, hate speech, or advocacy of hatred based on discrimination. The commission highlighted that such statements could disrupt the harmonious coexistence of ethnic groups in Kenya.

Gachagua, who was impeached in October 2024 on charges including inflaming ethnic tensions and promoting ethnic discrimination, has been vocal in his criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration. He has accused President Ruto of betrayal and has vowed to oppose his re-election bid in 2027.

In response to the NCIC’s warning, Gachagua’s allies have defended him, accusing the commission of bias and protecting the President. They argue that leaders like Gachagua should be protected for highlighting issues of ethnic marginalization rather than being persecuted.

The NCIC continues to monitor political discourse in the country, emphasizing the importance of maintaining national cohesion and unity.
