Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has urged Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka to consider working with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza government, fueling speculation about the opposition’s 2027 strategy.
Murkomen made the remarks during a Sunday service at AIC Milimani Church, subtly pointing out that both Ruto and Kalonzo share ties to the church, which he framed as a potential unifying factor in Kenya’s politics.
Murkomen Hints at Kalonzo-Ruto Alliance
Speaking at the pulpit, Murkomen acknowledged Kalonzo as the key opposition figure but suggested he should join forces with the ruling camp.
“William Ruto will be running in the elections and is from the AIC church. And the person leading the opposition is from the AIC church. So if you have the capacity, bring us together, so we can work as one,” Murkomen said.
The comments add to speculation that Kalonzo Musyoka 2027 ambitions may be shifting, though the Wiper leader has publicly insisted he will never align with Ruto, whom he once branded as leading a “blood-based government.”
Opposition Rift Over Kalonzo’s Future
On September 7, Kalonzo reaffirmed his loyalty to the opposition, warning fellow leaders against being swayed by political offers.
At the same time, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp accused Ruto’s allies of attempting to “poach” Kalonzo. Through the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), they alleged that Kenya Kwanza has been using clergy, politicians, and even “rainmakers” to lure the Wiper boss.
“That William Ruto is poaching Kalonzo day and night using men of cloth, local politicians, medicine men and rainmakers. It should be remembered that Ruto defeated Raila by just 200,000 votes,” the DCP statement read.
The statement highlighted Ruto’s narrow win over Raila Odinga in the 2022 General Election, painting Kalonzo as a potential game-changer in the next polls.
Who Will Be the 2027 Opposition Flagbearer?
While Gachagua insists he is the right man to take on Ruto, other opposition leaders, including George Natembeya, have emphasized that the opposition must unite behind a single candidate.
Reports suggest a special opposition committee has narrowed down the 2027 presidential flagbearer list to four names, with an official announcement expected soon.
Why Kalonzo Musyoka Matters in 2027
Kalonzo has increasingly been seen as the most viable opposition candidate, especially after Odinga signaled he may not run again. His political moves — whether staying in the opposition or joining Ruto — could significantly shape the outcome of the 2027 Kenya elections.
