A somber mood has engulfed Qwetu Hostels in Kasarani, Nairobi, after a young female student identified as Erika Kinyua was found dead in her room on Friday, October 24.
According to reports, the student’s relatives began to worry after being unable to reach her for several hours. Repeated phone calls went unanswered, prompting them to contact the hostel management to check on her.
Security officers at the facility responded swiftly and proceeded to her room. Upon entering, they were shocked to discover her lifeless body. Authorities say she had been dead for some time before being found.
Police officers from Kasarani were called to the scene and later moved the body to the city mortuary for post-mortem examination. The cause of death remains unclear as investigations continue.
The incident has left many residents and fellow students deeply saddened, with some taking to social media to express their condolences. Others have raised concerns about the mental and emotional well-being of students living away from home, urging institutions to enhance support systems within hostels.
Cases of students dying mysteriously in hostels have become increasingly common in recent years, sparking national conversations about mental health, loneliness, and pressure among young people in higher learning institutions.
As police work to establish the cause of Erika’s death, her family, friends, and the entire student community are left mourning a life cut short too soon.
