Toi Market traders begin rebuilding efforts after devastating fire

Traders at Nairobi’s Toi Market are embarking on the rebuilding process after a catastrophic fire ravaged more than 1,400 stalls just a week ago.

Thanks to a generous donation of 5,000 iron sheets from Governor Johnson Sakaja, the traders are hopeful about restoring their businesses and livelihoods.

The market, plagued by five major fires since 2002, has been a tough environment for vendors like Tobi Naloba, who sells clothing for mothers and children. “This is the first time we’ve received significant government assistance to rebuild,” Tobi remarked. “There were fires in 2007, 2013, 2019, 2023, and now this year. Despite being a repeated victim, I’m grateful for the iron sheets provided by the Governor, which will help me reconstruct my stall.”

For Michael Odhiambo, the situation is more desperate. He lost over KSh 300,000 in the blaze and is struggling to restart. “I don’t know where to begin; everything is gone,” he said. “Nevertheless, the iron sheets from the Governor are helping us get back on our feet. This is our only means of survival.”

The traders are also urging the county government to follow through on its promise to build a perimeter wall around the market. Market chairman Joshua Ogol believes this measure will enhance security. “The Governor assured us that funds are available for the perimeter wall, and we would be grateful if construction starts soon. Meanwhile, we appreciate his support during this challenging time,” Ogol stated.

Juliana Kabila, another vendor who lost three stalls in the fire, highlighted the necessity of improved security measures. “To prevent future losses, we are thankful for the Governor’s commitment to provide a perimeter wall and a fire engine. If these promises are fulfilled, we will be deeply appreciative,” she said.

As the traders strive to rebuild, their determination combined with the support from the county government provides a beacon of hope amidst the devastation.
