Taking to social media on Saturday, December 28, Wacu shared a series of throwback photos of their time together and expressed her deep sorrow.
In her heartfelt caption, Wacu wrote: “My heart is broken… you promised to wait till I come, but I took too long, and you couldn’t wait. Kasmo, I will miss you so much, big sister… Hopefully, I get a chance to say goodbye. Till we meet again, dear. RIP.”
The 39-year-old Wacu, who currently plays professional volleyball in Seychelles, shared a strong bond with Wanja.
The two were teammates on the national volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, for 11 years and had known each other for 22 years since their first meeting in 2002.
They also played together at Kenya Pipeline, where both served as setters and enjoyed a healthy rivalry at different points in their careers.
Wanja, 40, succumbed to gallbladder cancer after a brave battle. A statement from her brother Kevin Kimani confirmed her passing, noting that she had died on Thursday at 10 pm.
Wanja’s illustrious career began at KCB before she joined Kenya Pipeline. She was instrumental in shaping the Malkia Strikers, even serving as their trainer at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Despite retiring earlier this year, she remained actively involved in volleyball, traveling with the team to international tournaments like the 2024 World Challenger Cup in the Philippines.
Her remains are at Nairobi’s Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home
