Dr.Matiang’i: I will restore trust in Govt if elected president in 2027

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has expressed his intention to run for president in the 2027 general elections, promising to restore trust in public institutions and enhance governance.

Speaking during a gathering at the home of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Nyeri County, Dr. Matiang’i emphasized the need for leadership that fosters public confidence and unity among citizens.

“If entrusted with leadership, I will focus on restoring integrity in government and ensuring Kenyans can once again believe in the words and actions of public officials,” he said.

Reflecting on his time as Education Cabinet Secretary, Matiang’i described himself as a committed public servant who prioritized service delivery. “I used to travel across the country inspecting schools and overseeing national exams, often starting my day before sunrise,” he noted.

He stated that his leadership would aim to promote accountability and transparency, adding that the responsibility of electing trustworthy leaders lies with the citizens.

During the event, Matiang’i also called for national unity and encouraged Kenyans to stay informed and actively participate in democratic processes. He warned against divisive politics and urged leaders to focus on addressing the real challenges facing the country.

Dr. Matiang’i has started mobilizing support, particularly in the Gusii region, and is working alongside other prominent opposition leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), and Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-Kenya), all of whom attended the Nyeri meeting.

The opposition coalition has hinted at presenting a united front by supporting a single presidential candidate in the 2027 elections.
