Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a Nairobi taxi driver, Fred Atandi Morara, accused of stealing Ksh500,000 from a client.
According to DCI, Morara was hired on August 8, 2025, to drop a client at an Airbnb in Lavington. Instead, he allegedly stole the client’s phone and transferred half a million shillings from his accounts.
“The arrest followed a report by the male complainant, who alleged that a random taxi driver hired to drop him off at an Airbnb had stolen his phone and transferred over Sh500,000 from his accounts,” the DCI statement read.
Investigators revealed that the complainant had been leaving a social joint when Morara, waiting nearby, offered a cheaper fare. After the ride, the driver vanished with the phone and moved the money to multiple accounts, which were later deactivated.
Morara was apprehended while driving a Mazda Demio with suspected fake number plates—KDQ 810B and a spare set, KDN 993Q. Detectives also recovered mobile phones, SIM cards, and a sisal rope from him.
He has been handed over to DCI Dagoretti pending court arraignment.
The arrest comes just a day after police nabbed eight men linked to a violent criminal gang operating across Nairobi, Nakuru, and Mombasa. During the operation in Mtito Andei, Makueni County, officers seized stolen goods and a Toyota Porte getaway vehicle, disrupting the gang’s operations.
DCI said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to tackle organized crime and safeguard public property.
