Popular digital content creator Lydia Wanjiru has recently voiced strong criticism against Pastor Kanyari and several fellow content creators, accusing them of “playing with God.” The controversy began with a video featuring content creators Peter Kioi, Rish Kamunge, and a friend presenting Pastor Kanyari with condoms, Arimis (a well-known Kenyan skincare ointment), and Kotex tampons during a church service.
Lydia Wanjiru’s critique was blunt and pointed. She expressed profound disappointment at what she viewed as a disrespectful prank, stressing that using such items in a place of worship shows a disregard for both the church and the faith of its attendees. She condemned the act as a low blow from the content creators and emphasized that it undermines the sanctity of the religious setting.
Furthermore, Lydia criticized the congregation’s response to the incident, noting that many attendees were clapping and recording rather than protesting what she considered inappropriate behavior.
This is not the first time Pastor Kanyari has attracted controversy. In a previous incident, a female TikToker named Faith M Peters presented him with condoms, panty liners, and petroleum jelly during a Sunday service, declaring her affection for the recently single pastor. Kanyari, who seemed amused, accepted and unwrapped the gifts on the pulpit, drawing a mixed reaction from the audience.
Another notable controversy involved Kanyari’s “exorcism” attempt on a TikTok live stream aimed at a gay TikToker named Mpenzi Chokuu. Chokuu, dressed in a traditional buibui, was subjected to a bizarre mix of religious declarations and military terminology, with Kanyari shouting “fire!” and making references to grenades and machine guns. Chokuu playfully reacted, furthering the theatrical nature of the event. The performance elicited a range of responses, from amusement to condemnation of the perceived disrespect for religion.
In defense of his actions, Pastor Kanyari has stated that his involvement with TikTok is not driven by personal gain but by a desire to reach and assist the younger generation. He mentioned his intention to help address issues such as drug addiction, which he believes is prevalent on the platform.
These incidents have ignited a broader debate in Kenya, a nation where religious values are deeply revered, about the boundaries between humor and respect in sacred spaces. Public opinion remains divided, reflecting the complexity of maintaining decorum while engaging with contemporary media.
Lydia Wanjiru’s outspoken stance underscores a significant concern about maintaining respect and decorum in religious settings, highlighting the ongoing dialogue about the intersection of faith, humor, and modern content creation.
