Shock and grief have engulfed the Kangari area in the Kigumo constituency, Muranga County, following the deaths of a young mother and her child in a tragedy that unfolded on the eve of the New Year.
The 25-year-old woman had travelled to her parents’ home in December to spend the festive season with family and friends. Those close to her said the visit was marked by warmth and togetherness with no visible signs of distress.
On the final day of the year, concern arose after a brief interaction at home between the woman and her younger brother, who later stepped out on an errand at her request.
The man said that she saw his sister take a rope, and he jokingly asked her if she wanted to commit suicide.
Later that evening a neighbour alerted the family, leading to a devastating discovery at the rental house.
Authorities were notified, and investigations commenced as the community gathered in disbelief.
The child who had been left in the care of her mother also died in the incident, deepening the sorrow felt across the village.
Family members described the woman as cheerful, social and supportive, noting that she had completed a finance degree in 2024 and had previously worked in Nairobi before returning home.
Friends said she had been seeking stable employment and remained hopeful despite challenges.
As condolences continue to pour in, relatives have appealed for assistance to help with funeral arrangements for the two lives lost.
Community leaders have urged families to remain attentive to one another and encouraged young people facing difficulties to seek support early.
The tragedy has renewed calls for stronger mental health awareness and expanded job opportunities for youths across the county.
