Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence on why he chose not to attend the burial of ODM leader Raila Odinga, a decision that sparked widespread speculation across the country.
Speaking during a recent public event, Gachagua claimed that he received credible information suggesting there were plans to harm him if he showed up for the funeral. According to him, the security concerns were too serious to ignore.
“Sikuenda matanga ya Raila Odinga sababu nilipata habari kulikuwa na mpango ya kunipiga hata kuniuwa,” Gachagua said, insisting that he made the decision purely for his own safety.
His revelation has now opened fresh debate within the political arena, with some leaders questioning the source of the alleged threats while others calling for investigations to clarify the matter.
Gachagua emphasized that he had no personal issue with Raila and would have attended the burial under normal circumstances. He expressed sympathy to the Odinga family but maintained that his security team advised him to stay away after receiving the alleged intelligence.
The remarks have stirred reactions among Kenyans, with many eager to understand whether the claims point to deeper political tensions or simply precautionary measures taken during an emotionally charged period.
As discussions continue, analysts say the statement could influence future political interactions between Mt Kenya and Nyanza leaders, especially as the country edges closer to the next election cycle.
