President Ruto Secures Ghana’s Support for Raila Odinga’s AU Commission Chairperson Bid

During President William Ruto’s official visit to Ghana, Kenya effectively garnered the support of Ghana for Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union chairmanship. Following discussions with President Nana Akufo-Addo, it was agreed that Ghana would endorse Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission chairmanship, reciprocated by Kenya’s commitment to support Ghana’s nominee for the Secretary General of the Commonwealth.

Expressing gratitude, President Ruto extended his appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for Ghana’s endorsement of Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission chairmanship. In return, Kenya pledged its support for Ghana’s nominee, Hon Shirley Botchwey, for the Secretary General of the Commonwealth position.

The decision to endorse candidates reflects a bilateral understanding aimed at fostering cooperation between the two nations. Kenya’s endorsement process involved extensive engagement across various stakeholders within the government, underscoring its commitment to inclusivity and transparency in candidate selection.

President Ruto’s advocacy for the Pan-African Agenda has been prominent, emphasizing key principles such as independence, sovereignty, peace, security, development, prosperity, and sustainability. Kenya’s aspiration for the AU Commission Chairmanship resonates with its dedication to contributing to the realization of Agenda 2063, demonstrating its commitment to continental development and progress.
