Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has sharply criticized former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, questioning his credibility on matters of education reform.
In a strongly worded statement, Kaluma wondered how Matiang’i, whom he described as “the worst and most corrupt Education Minister Kenya has ever had,” can now position himself as a voice on education reforms.
“Where from does Matiang’i, who is the worst and most corrupt Education Minister Kenya has ever had, get the courage to lecture us on education reforms?” Kaluma posed.
The remarks have reignited debate online, with supporters of Kaluma backing his criticism while others have defended Matiang’i’s tenure at the Ministry of Education, where he oversaw major changes in the examination system and introduced strict reforms aimed at curbing exam irregularities.
Matiang’i has recently been speaking about governance and policy issues, including education, something that appears to have triggered Kaluma’s response. The exchange adds to the growing political tension as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
As the debate unfolds, Kenyans remain divided over the legacy of Matiang’i’s time in the education docket and whether he has the moral authority to comment on current reforms.
