The renowned musician, Mejja, whose real name is Major Nameye Khadija, recently shared a surprising detail about his financial affairs during an interview with Radio Maisha. Contrary to expectations, Mejja revealed that his wealth is registered under his mother’s name, sparking a range of reactions.
In explaining this unconventional decision, Mejja emphasized the deep bond he shares with his mother. He stated that he designated her as the next of kin because, in his view, there is no one else he trusts more than his mother. Despite having a girlfriend, Mejja expressed hesitancy in assigning her this responsibility, citing the need to establish a deeper level of trust and understanding in their relationship.
According to Mejja, safeguarding his wealth is paramount, and he believes his mother is the most reliable person for the role. He stated, “For now, I’ll have my mother as the next of kin until I get the right person to fill her shoes. You can’t just get someone and entrust them with your wealth. It’s good to know someone first; time will tell the kind of person that you’re dealing with. It’s good to do your due diligence first before trusting anyone.”
This revelation adds another layer to Mejja’s strong connection with his mother. In 2021, Mejja had previously disclosed the reason behind adopting his mother’s second name as his surname. Raised in Nyeri’s Majengo slums, he pays homage to his mother, who singlehandedly raised him and his two brothers after their father’s departure. Mejja shared, “I call myself Khadija because my father was a sperm donor… She’s my inspiration.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced growing up without a father figure, Mejja emphasized how this experience influenced his decision to actively participate in his children’s lives. Despite facing numerous challenges and acknowledging the absence of paternal advice, he is determined not to be distant from his own children. Mejja highlighted the importance of maintaining a family unit and expressed his commitment to be there for his kids, irrespective of the circumstances with their mother.
