Meet DJ Afro: The Man Juicing Up Movies for Kenyans for Over a Decade

Over the years, Kenya has witnessed the emergence of numerous talented individuals in its entertainment industry, spanning various fields. Among these luminaries, one name stands out prominently, captivating audiences both locally and internationally – James Mungai, better known as DJ Afro Amigos or Kimoda.

Arguably, a significant portion of Kenyan populace, regardless of their geographical location, has encountered or enjoyed movies narrated by this gifted entertainer. His unparalleled talent has not only endeared him to local fans but has also garnered attention from beyond Kenya’s borders, including neighboring Tanzania.

DJ Afro embarked on his journey in 2006, captivating Kenyans with his quality and humorous commentary on movies. Initially honing his skills in local theaters in Rongai and Kiserian, he faced his fair share of challenges, including criticism of his work. Despite these obstacles, his passion for entertaining persisted.

Reflecting on his early struggles, DJ Afro reminisced about the lack of recording equipment a decade ago, forcing him to deliver live commentary during video shows in Nairobi’s outskirts. Undeterred, he eventually relocated to Nakuru, where a friend provided him with the necessary equipment to kickstart his career. Through hard work and determination, he gradually established himself, eventually owning his own recording equipment.

In interviews, DJ Afro attributes his success to his faith in God and emphasizes the importance of creativity in his craft. His ingenuity lies in his ability to infuse each movie with his unique perspective, making even foreign-language films accessible and enjoyable to Kenyan audiences.

Despite facing scrutiny over the explicit language in some of his works, DJ Afro remained resilient, acknowledging his past mistakes and working with regulatory bodies to address concerns. His popularity soared, leading to collaborations with major platforms like Gikuyu TV and even catching the attention of global giants like Netflix.

In 2021, amidst the launch of Netflix Kenya, a promotional video featuring a DJ Afro-esque commentary sparked public outrage for not involving the man himself. Responding to the public outcry, Netflix reached out to DJ Afro, subsequently enlisting him to provide commentary for their official trailer of the movie “Thunder Force.”

DJ Afro’s journey exemplifies resilience, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his craft. Through his unique brand of entertainment, he has not only captured the hearts of Kenyans but has also left an indelible mark on the global stage.
