Mary Akinyi: Class Four Dropout Who Quit Barmaid Job Scores B+ in KCSE

Mary Akinyi, a former barmaid who discontinued her education at Standard Four, defied the odds by achieving an impressive B+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam.

Originally from Yiro village in Yimbo East Ward, Bondo sub-county, Akinyi had to leave formal education during Class Four and ended up working as a barmaid in Bondo and Siaya towns.

However, her experience at the bar was far from pleasant, as patrons subjected her to mockery and mistreatment. This harsh reality fueled her determination to pursue a different path.

“After dropping out of school, I worked as a barmaid in Bondo and Siaya towns. It was challenging because some customers mocked me,” she recounted.

Undeterred by financial constraints and societal biases, Akinyi made the courageous decision to return to education. Her journey continued with the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam, where she scored an impressive 362 marks.

With the support of a benevolent supporter, Akinyi secured admission to Ran’gala Girls High School at the age of 23. Transitioning to secondary education presented its challenges, especially considering her age. Nevertheless, with guidance and counseling, she found the strength to persevere and blend in with her younger peers.

While Mary is overjoyed by her B+ result in the KCSE exam, challenges persist. She still owes the school Sh182,620, and her aspirations of pursuing a career in law hang in the balance if she cannot obtain her certificate due to outstanding fees.
