In Eldoret, 23-year-old Amon Kipruto has revealed the painful consequences of selling one of his kidneys as a desperate attempt to escape poverty. Initially approached by individuals offering financial help in exchange for his kidney, he refused. Yet, the burden of bills and economic difficulties eventually compelled him to accept the offer.
Kipruto arranged for the operation through the same group and received KSh 600,000 for the kidney at a local hospital. Unfortunately, the aftermath was harsh. He soon suffered severe health complications that have required ongoing medical care, placing further emotional and financial pressure on him. “I agreed to the surgery, and they paid me the promised KSh 600,000, but I never anticipated the suffering that followed,” Kipruto reflected with regret.
The situation has also devastated his family. His mother, Leah Meto, was heartbroken upon learning of her son’s surgery. A relative notified her while she was away, and she rushed back to find Kipruto in poor condition. “I was shocked to hear my son’s kidney had been removed. I immediately returned and saw him struggling,” she recounted.
Both Kipruto and his mother now attend regular hospital appointments due to ongoing complications from the procedure. He admits that his decision has brought distress and embarrassment to his family, especially his mother, and he hopes his story serves as a warning to others facing similar financial desperation.
