Renowned Kenyan actress Lucy Maina has garnered acclaim in the entertainment realm for her exceptional portrayal of the lead character in the new Citizen TV series, ‘Becky.’
Born and raised in Nairobi, Lucy is the only daughter in a family of four brothers. Her academic journey commenced at Green Cottage Academy in Kiambu, but it was during her secondary education at Gathirimu Girls that she discovered her deep-seated passion for drama.
Lucy’s foray into acting began with her involvement in the school’s drama club, where she initially secured a modest role as a swaying tree. Despite this humble beginning, the experience ignited her fervor for the performing arts. Notably, the influence of alumna Jackie Matubia from the same school further intensified Lucy’s commitment to drama.
Upon completing her secondary education, Lucy faced a pivotal choice between her love for the arts and her initial interest in travel and tourism. Although she initially pursued a course in travel and tourism, she soon realized that her true calling lay in acting. Her acting journey took off with a church play, leading her to auditions. Despite an unsuccessful attempt to secure a role in the popular Kenyan TV series ‘Aunty Boss’ in 2019, Lucy’s unwavering determination eventually paid off with a callback for a different role, marking the beginning of her acting career.
The apex of Lucy’s acting challenges came with her portrayal of Becky in the eponymous show. The character, with a humble background and a history of hardships, required Lucy to navigate emotionally intense scenes, including moments of crying, all within a demanding shooting schedule.
Beyond ‘Becky,’ Lucy has graced various shows and films such as ‘Crime and Justice,’ ‘Murder Camp,’ ‘Amandla,’ and ‘Second Family.’
Outside the realm of acting, Lucy derives joy from nature walks, drawing inspiration and humility from the natural world. In 2022, she diversified her interests by venturing into farming and conducting research for documentaries.
