One of the most loyal supporters of the ODM Party and a close friend of the late Raila Amollo Odinga, Roselyn Akinyi, popularly known as Mama Chungwa, has been deeply affected by the passing of the veteran opposition leader.
Mama Chungwa became a familiar face at ODM rallies and political events across the country, always dressed in vibrant orange outfits and carrying baskets of designer oranges — a gesture that earned her the affectionate nickname “Mama Chungwa.” Her unwavering dedication and visible presence at every Azimio and ODM function made her one of the most recognizable grassroots supporters of Raila Odinga.
Speaking in an emotional interview with TV47, Roselyn Akinyi revealed that Raila Odinga was more than just a political leader to her — he was a mentor, a friend, and a father figure. She recounted how Raila had personally changed her life by offering her financial support when times were tough.
“Raila changed my life completely. He put me on a monthly salary of Ksh 30,000. Because of him, I was able to take care of myself and my family,” she said tearfully.
Since the news of Raila’s death broke, Mama Chungwa says she has been struggling to come to terms with the loss. She admitted that the pain has been overwhelming and confessed that she has even contemplated taking her own life, saying she feels lost without the man who had given her hope and purpose.
“I don’t know the way forward. I am nothing without Raila Odinga,” she said, breaking down in tears.
Despite her grief and financial challenges, Mama Chungwa insists that nothing will stop her from attending Raila’s burial in Bondo. She emotionally declared that even if she lacks the fare, she is willing to walk all the way from Nairobi to Bondo to pay her final respects to her political icon and personal hero.
“Even if I don’t have fare, I will start walking. I must go to Bondo to say goodbye to my best friend,” she vowed.
Her heartfelt words have touched many Kenyans, with thousands expressing sympathy and support for her through social media. Many have described her loyalty as unmatched, calling her a symbol of true devotion to Raila Odinga’s ideals and legacy.
Raila Odinga’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his supporters nationwide, and for people like Mama Chungwa, the loss feels personal and unbearable. Her story is a reminder of how much Raila’s life and leadership impacted ordinary Kenyans — not just politically, but emotionally and personally.
As the country prepares for Raila’s final send-off in Bondo, Mama Chungwa’s sorrow reflects the pain of millions who saw him not just as a politician, but as a father of the nation — a man whose vision and compassion touched countless lives.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
