How suspect in Sh3.9M Eastleigh robbery was tracked down in Mombasa buying a car

A suspect connected to the audacious robbery in Eastleigh, during which a man tragically lost his life and a sum of Sh3.9 million was stolen, has been apprehended.

The arrest took place in the coastal city of Mombasa, where the suspect was found in the midst of purchasing a vehicle with money suspected to be part of the loot from the incident that occurred on March 30, 2024.

Law enforcement officers acted swiftly, seizing the individual who had been identified at the scene of the crime. Investigators had been monitoring his movements from the capital to Mombasa.

“We have a suspect who is currently being transported to Nairobi. He was attempting to buy a car in Mombasa using funds believed to be from the robbery,” confirmed an officer familiar with the case, speaking on Wednesday.

Following his apprehension, the suspect was brought back to Nairobi and placed under police custody, while efforts to locate other accomplices in the robbery continue.

Although the police did not officially disclose whether any cash was recovered from the suspect, the capture is a significant step forward in the investigation.

The incident that led to the arrest unfolded when 26-year-old Adan Ali Mohamed was riding as a passenger on a motorcycle, only to be intercepted by a gang on another motorcycle.

Surveillance footage captured the ordeal on the bustling Muratina street around 11 am. The assailant, armed and riding pillion, approached Adan, demanding the bag containing the cash. Adan hesitated, prompting the assailant to fire a close-range shot before snatching the bag and fleeing on the waiting motorcycle, leaving Adan injured on the ground.

Medical assessments revealed that the bullet had struck Adan’s spinal cord, inflicting severe injuries.

Law enforcement, led by Starehe police boss Fred Abuga, reiterated their commitment to apprehending the perpetrators, urging local businesses to install surveillance cameras to aid investigations.

In addition to pursuing external leads, detectives are also exploring the possibility of insider involvement in the robbery, leaving no avenue unexplored in their quest for justice.
