Government Announces Salary Increment For Civil Servants Following Threats To Shutdown Country

The government has announced a salary increase for civil servants, ranging from Ksh1,000 to Ksh30,000, in line with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This move follows mounting pressure from employees who had threatened to demonstrate due to delays in salary adjustments.

Public Service Principal Secretary Amos Gathecha confirmed the salary changes in a letter, stating they will take effect from July 1, 2024. “The second phase of the new basic salaries and salary scales will be implemented for civil servants in CSG17 to CSG4,” he noted.

Under this revised pay structure, the lowest-paid civil servants will see their salaries increase from Ksh16,950 to Ksh18,250, while those currently earning Ksh19,220 will now receive Ksh20,560. Employees in higher job groups will also benefit; for instance, those earning Ksh102,860 will see their pay rise by Ksh3,000 to Ksh105,570.

House allowances will also be adjusted accordingly. “The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has provided guidance on the implementation of remuneration and benefits for the civil service,” Gathecha added, instructing Human Resources heads across various ministries to promptly verify the salary conversions.

This announcement brings relief to civil servants nationwide, especially after their recent threats to protest if the government failed to implement the agreed CBA terms. The salary adjustments will be automatically processed through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Database system.
